28% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing homelessness or housing instability at some point in their lives — and those who did had two to four times the odds of reporting depression, anxiety, self-harm, considering suicide, and attempting suicide compared to those with stable housing. Homeless gay men (the most affected demographic) are using saunas, sex work and hook-up apps like Grindr to survive, and they aren’t talking about it because of shame.

This is how I survived, too. Many LGBTQ youth have been abused at homeless shelters, especially those meant for adults, while many others avoid shelters altogether. Discharge and emancipation from foster care is a large contributor to youth homelessness. We provide estimates of homelessness (both recent experiences and lifetime prevalence) from three nationally representative surveys of U.S.
