In honor of LGBTQ+ Pride month, is saluting the stars of The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful, Beyond the Gates and General Hospital who are. This is a list of soap opera characters who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, and the live action television and radio soap operas which feature them.

I would be remiss not to mention Sonia Fowler, the et playing bisexual icon who has been a member of the EastEnders cast for the past thirty years. Nicky made a full recovery following the accident and departed the village to travel the world with his boyfriend, Suni Sharma.

The program has recently garnered attention for a storyline focusing on Matty Barton, a transgender man navigating the difficulty of the prison system after being falsely accused of stabbing another character.

The story has shed light on the unique problems and limitations faced by the trans community under the legal system. Other scenes this year have touched on sexuality and aging:showing Mary Goskirk, portrayed by the year-old Louise Jameson, struggling with her attraction to the decades younger Suzy Merton. Although the character was killed-off in , Liv Dingle provided asexual representation, while also grappling with addiction, epilepsy, and relationship with abuse survivor, Vinny Dingle.

Soap operas have always been my happy place. Historically these programs have pushed the needle on perceived acceptability, ushering in stories that have shocked audiences while also fostering sympathy and understanding.
