When Ben Packard was just a boy, his older brother walked out of his grandparents home into a cold winter's night and was never seen again. Now, decades later, Ben Packard is a police deputy on leave and under investigation for a shooting.

With too much time to think, Packard can't help but revisit the past. When new information about his brother's case is revealed for the first time in years, Packard is determined to find the truth, even without the department's resources to help him. When his search leads him to a second mysterious death, Packard finds a strange connection between the two cases. With friends and foes working against him, it is up to Packard alone to untangle the web, finally learn the truth about his brother, and catch a killer.

Two teenagers break into a house on a secluded lake in search of prescription drugs…but the simple burglary transforms into something far more sinister. Emmett Burr has been keeping secrets in his basement for decades, and he'll do whatever it takes to make sure they don't get out. He may have appeared to be a helpless old man, but the lines between victim, abuser, and protector blur very quickly.

Ben Packard, the new sheriff deputy of Sandy Lake, Minnesota, ended up there because he wanted a fresh start. But as he's leading the investigation of the missing teens, he discovers that he'll have to reveal his own secrets and dig deep into a time he'd rather forget if he wants to save them in time. Joshua Moehling's second Ben Packard novel begins with the Labor Day weekend death of Bill Sanderson: former high-school quarterback, husband to Carrie, former husband to Sherri, used car salesman, lover of easy money.

Deputy Ben Packard arrives at the scene to begin his questioning; it seems everyone has a story to tell about Bill, but none of them have a clear motive for wanting him dead. Meanwhile, a tragedy strikes the sheriff's department, and Ben has to choose between the quiet life he came to Sandy Lake for, or fighting for the full-time role of Sheriff, which he isn't entirely sure he wants.

Always the outsider, there's a dark history to this town that Ben hasn't figured out yet; bad blood and old secrets run deep.
